Mercedes-Benz Explores Windows That Communicate and Smarter EV Electronics

Mercedes-Benz advanced windshield display research

Mercedes-Benz is exploring a future in which vehicle windows do more than provide a view and keep wind and rain out of the cabin.

The company's latest research includes LEDs embedded in glass that could display warnings or traffic information to other road users. Larger mini-LED displays could serve the rear window, while higher-resolution micro LEDs could handle smaller graphics. When inactive, the elements would remain nearly invisible.

Inside, a holographic display concept uses a dashboard projector and transparent windshield film to show information selectively. Different viewing angles could let passengers see content that remains invisible to the driver.

Mercedes is also developing programmable power converters that manage energy at individual battery cells or cell groups. The technology could deliver a stable output of up to 800 volts while supporting more flexible battery designs, AC/DC conversion and bidirectional charging. The current development version delivers up to 3 kilowatts.

These are research projects, rather than announced production features. Mercedes-Benz has not identified a customer vehicle or launch date for them.

No word on whether Safelite is equipped to change out a piece of high-tech glass like this either.
