Porsche Mission S Previews a New Supercar Above the 911

Porsche is looking beyond the 911 with the Mission S, a dramatic mid-engine concept that previews a new family of supercars. And unlike limited-production halo cars of the past, Porsche says this platform is intended to become a permanent part of its lineup.
Unveiled in New York City, the Mission S signals a new design direction while borrowing heavily from Porsche's considerable history. Its rounded headlights and muscular fenders reference the 911, while the low nose recalls the 911 GT1. The roofline takes inspiration from the legendary 959, and the wheels reinterpret the distinctive design of the 928.
The concept also incorporates an active rear wing and cooling elements inspired by the Porsche 917 race car.
Inside, Porsche is taking an approach that should have enthusiasts cheering. There's no permanently mounted center touchscreen or passenger display. Yes, Porsche has apparently discovered that driving enthusiasts might prefer driving to navigating menus. A retractable MagSafe-compatible smartphone holder provides navigation and information when needed.
The driver gets a five-dial instrument cluster with a central analog tachometer that physically moves closer depending on the selected driving mode. Traditional switches and tactile controls remain central to the experience.
The Mission S debuted at a Queens waterfront location where Porsche photographed its original 550 Spyder in 1953, reinforcing the connection between the company's past and future.
Porsche hasn't announced production timing, powertrain specifications or pricing. Considering this will sit above the 911, prospective buyers might want to start saving now. Or consider selling a vacation home.
One thing is clear: Porsche's most iconic sports car may no longer be its ultimate performance offering.
